Discovering Frederica Academy's Fine Arts Program
The mission of the Fine Arts Department is to cultivate each student’s ability to create, perform, and respond to the arts. This purpose is accomplished through a variety of opportunities that develop a student’s creative skills and abilities.

Each year, an endowment supports an annual arts experience that touches the lives of all Frederica Academy community members and reflects Miss Fleming’s values. Ellen E. Fleming, Frederica Academy's 8th Head of School, served with great passion and distinction until her retirement. The Ellen Fleming Endowment for the Arts ensures that Miss Fleming’s love of the arts will benefit generations.
The goals of the Visiting Artist program align with the school’s core mission:

Performing Arts
Lower School
Lower School
At the earliest stages of Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st Grade, The Lower School curriculum is based on Orff methods integrating music, movement, voice, and creative dramatics. In 2nd grade, students learn to play mallet instruments, such as xylophones and glockenspiels. In 3rd grade, students begin formal training in string instruments and recorders. The 4th grade culminates their performing experience in a musical theater presentation. Lower School students perform regularly at division-wide assemblies and community events.
Middle School
Middle School
Middle School performing arts sequence develops students’ musical fluency through ‘learning by doing’. In 5th and 6th grade, general music instruction and appreciation continues. In 7th and 8th grade, students may choose to participate in Rock Band. Students are exposed to musical concepts. Middle Schoolers may also join the extracurricular Musical Theater troupe.

Upper School
The Upper School Performing Arts Sequence offers a variety of required and elective courses to meet students’ interests and challenge those at advanced levels. Audio-Video technology is integrated into the coursework and ensemble performances.

Lower School
Lower School
In the Lower School, visual arts are taught in ways that foster artistic growth and self-expression. Instruction at each grade level includes two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, as well as art history. Students learn the foundation of visual arts as they work with a variety of forms and formats. The Lower School art room is specifically equipped with appropriate-level materials and tools. Students connect the arts with interdisciplinary and community outreach projects.
Middle School
Middle School
At the Middle School level, the visual arts sequence advances the principles of art with continued emphasis on Art History, color theory and design. The curriculum provides opportunities to explore drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, graphic arts, photography, and sculpture. Curricular projects as well as extracurricular and competitive opportunities are designed to meet the readiness, interests, and learning profiles of adolescents.
Upper School
Upper School
In the Upper School, students follow a sequence of required and elective arts courses to continue their artistic and creative growth. Grounded in STEAM techniques, students may build a program of arts study individually tailored to their interests. Semester-long classes cover drawing, painting, printmaking and ceramics, so that students develop a rich portfolio of two dimensional and three dimensional works. Art History is offered to integrate the study of World History and cultures.
Courses include: Studio Art I, Studio Art II, Studio Art III, and Art History
Creative Media Arts
Middle School Graphic Arts allows students to explore the fundamentals of media creation. Students work with various digital media as well as elements and principles of design. Taught in a Mac Lab, Students use Adobe Creative Suite, iMovie, Garageband and other creative software to manipulate, and analyze digital artworks. Middle School students build skills in photography, videography, photo editing, logo creation, and website design as they manage short projects and work in teams.
The Upper School Creative Media track incorporates digital photography, videography, journalism, ad broadcasting. Digital Media is an elective course that allows students to explore the fundamentals of media creation, including pre-production, storyboarding, and content management. The Audio Production course covers live and recorded sound design, multitrack recording and mixing, and music editing.
The Yearbook class offers opportunities for photography, media arts production, writing and editing, as well as mastery of photoediting, research and proprietary production layout software. The final project is the school Yearbook.
