Dear Frederica Academy Community,
I am sending this email on a Saturday because I have important news to share with the Frederica Academy family.
After conducting a nation-wide search, the Head of School Search Committee proposed and the Board of Trustees unanimously approved hiring Scott Hutchinson to be Frederica Academy's next Head of School. Mr. Hutchinson accepted the position this morning and his tenure will begin this summer in preparation for the 2019-2020 school year.
As an accomplished and passionate lifelong learner, Scott Hutchinson is uniquely positioned to lead Frederica Academy as the school celebrates its 50th anniversary and beyond. His extensive and diverse independent school background started when he was a student at the New Hampton School in New Hampshire. Mr. Hutchinson's impressive educational credentials; his demonstrated record of success at the schools where he has taught, coached, and served in roles of increasing responsibility for the past four decades; and his collaborative and highly-regarded experience as an administrator align perfectly with the Head of School position profile our community developed together when we launched the search process over a year ago.
He will be a great leader for Frederica Academy.
Mr. Hutchinson graduated from Duke University where he majored in English and served as captain of the soccer team. After graduation, he accepted a position teaching English at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh before earning a master's degree in counseling from the College of William and Mary. After graduate school, Mr. Hutchinson returned to North Carolina to teach at Durham Academy.
In 1983, Mr. Hutchinson accepted his first administrator position when he became the Middle School Director at Brookstone School in Columbus, Georgia, which preceded divisional leadership roles at Fort Worth Country Day; Annunciation Orthodox School in Houston, Texas; Brentwood School in Los Angeles; and the Webb School in Knoxville, Tennessee.
In 1999, Mr. Hutchinson was appointed Webb's President, a position he held for fifteen years. He has served as the Head of School of Renbrook School in West Hartford, Connecticut, since 2015.
Mr. Hutchinson is married to Suzan, his wife of twenty-four years. They have a daughter, Carter, who is a senior in high school at Loomis Chaffee.
Please join me in welcoming Scott, Suzan, and Carter Hutchinson to the Frederica Academy family and in expressing our appreciation to Ellen Fleming, for her past leadership, and Jay St. John as he continues to serve as our Interim Head of School. Mr. St. John and Mr. Hutchinson will work closely with each other, the Board, and the school's leadership team to ensure a smooth transition leading up to the 2019-2020 school year.
The Head of School Search Committee and the Board of Trustees express their excitement about the appointment of Scott Hutchinson as our next Head of School and extend our heartfelt appreciation to the students, teachers, coaches, administrators, parents, alumni, alumni parents, former trustees, and members of the Board of Visitors who warmly welcomed Mr. Hutchinson when Mrs. Hutchinson and he visited our campus and community earlier this month. We believe your affection for Frederica Academy and steadfast support for its mission was an important factor in Mr. Hutchinson's decision to accept our Head of School position.
We look forward to Mr. Hutchinson building on the school's rich history as we continue to maximize the potential of each student and to prepare every student for college and adult life through the development of mind, body, and spirit.
