At Frederica Academy guidance and counseling are organized around the belief that the ninth through twelfth grade experience is a developmental process which helps our students set and meet goals - academically, extracurricularly, socially and personally. We also believe that our program complements the school's mission statement, "To maximize the potential of each qualified student and prepare him/her for college and adult life through the development of mind, body and spirit."
As a college preparatory school, much of the advising at FA in the Upper School takes place within the context of our understanding of the requirements for college admission. A calendar of activities for the four years of high school includes the following:
During the freshman and sophomore years, students begin the process of defining goals for college through course selection and extracurricular choices. Both freshmen and sophomores are administered the Preliminary SAT (PSAT), and sophomores become familiar with the ACT exam by taking the PLAN.
As juniors, students once again take the PSAT, this time as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program. The formal college advising process begins during the junior year when students attend the "Junior Class Kick-Off College Program Night" with their parents. Additionally, juniors and their parents begin meeting individually with the College Counselor. Together they set goals and develop strategies for admission testing as they create a list of colleges for consideration. Also, students are encouraged to visit colleges of interest with their family.
During the senior year, the College Counselor helps students decide on their final list of colleges, counsels them about recommendations from classroom teachers, provides opportunities to practice interviewing skills, and writes a comprehensive letter of recommendation for each senior. This process continues until each student makes his or her final college choice in the spring.

Naviance Family Connection is a web-based service designed especially for students and parents. Ninth through twelfth grade students and their parents will receive their own log-in information to Naviance Family Connection, which will help make decisions about courses, colleges, and careers. Family Connection is linked with College Planner, a service that the College Counseling Office uses to track and analyze data about college and career plans, so it provides up-to-date information that is specific to Frederica Academy.
